May 2006

Who doesn’t love a good road trip? Granted, it can be the source of much contention, but it can also be the making of tons of great memories.

I’m heading to Idaho tonight with the boy, then we’re heading to Utah on Thursday. He’s going to be meeting the fam for the first time ever – a daunting experience to be sure. Anyone who knows my family will vouch for this, if for nothing more than the fact that there are 11 of us in all. With that many people it’s easy to see how conflicting personalities can make for an interesting dynamic.

It’ll be nice to see my family though. I haven’t seen my parents since my graduation last May. I’ll be sure to update you all on the trip when I get back. Until then, au revoir.

iLingo – The iLingo Euro comes with six languages (Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Italian and Russian). You can download it to your iPod and start learning a language asap. That or brush up on whatever language you took in high school. I SO want this so I can learn some vital Spanish phrases before Costa Rica, catch up on my French and Italian since it’s been a year since I’ve had to speak either, and learn some German so I can be cool like Tony and his friends. I’d also love to get the iLingo Asia, but I think the Euro languages will be an easier place to begin.

Nike + iPod Sport Kit – This is SO cool. Nike has teamed with Apple to make a shoe with a sensor in it that connects to your iPod and tells you how long you have run – distance, time and speed. If I was super rich I’d buy this in a second. Nike has even designed clothes with tight-fitting pockets for your iPod on your sleeve so you don’t have to hold it while you run. The thought of such convenience is almost overwhelming. I seriously want this.

The above are the problems with buying something new and cool like an iPod. Once you’ve got it, you want to start accessorizing it. And why not? Unless of course you’re poor. I think first I’ll work on getting a new phone…

This week for my newspaper I reported on a teacher who was arrested for innappropriate behavior with a student, including sexual assault, battery and annoying a child under 18 (aka sending inappropriate messages to the child).

The girl involved was a student of the teacher. Perhaps they had a relationship, perhaps they didn’t. I don’t know because that information isn’t being released. The point is: This girl was 16 or 17 years old when the first incident occurred and the teacher is 46 years old – old enough to know better and to know he could ruin his career for getting involved with a student. Yet this is the letter I received from one of his students today:

“As one of Mr. Quesenberry past student i knew him pretty well. He is not the type of person who would harm  anyone. As a female I never felt  threatened by him in any way. He always treated every student with rerspect.

“He was my teacher last year and saw what many students saw in the class, the student who accuse him is given false information, because she was the one that flirted with him and not him with her.Is my concern that Woodland High is loosing a great teacher who knows his job very well.

“It is disapointing to hear he is losing everything from a false accusation when many students know he is not capable of harming someone especially in that kind of act. I hope the truth will come soon and his reputation is clean again, because he is one of the best teachers Woodland District has.”

Um, what?!?!?! Yeah, maybe she flirted with him, but she didn’t force him to do anything. Additionally, the student isn’t even the one who reported it. It was another teacher on campus who reported it because by law she was required to do so once she knew the inappropriate behavior was going on. Once again, a female is blamed for being assaulted by a male.

To me this can be equated to a man saying he couldn’t help himself because of what a girl was wearing. If you were A REAL MAN you wouldn’t even THINK of doing something you knew was inappropriate or unwarranted. No woman is “asking for it.”

I’m so sick and tired of how this plays out in the media and has permeated into the psyche of the general population. For crying out loud, why don’t we just arrest this teenager and let the teacher keep on teaching since he’s obviously the one who wouldn’t do anything inappropriate.

I wonder how many other girls have been sexually assaulted or molested by this man and haven’t said anything. After all, he’s only been teaching at the same high school for 7 years.

I’m disgusted right now (if you couldn’t tell).

Want some more of my opinions about sexual assault and teachers dating students? Read this or this.

Why is it that there are tons of crap movies during the year and then as soon as summer gets here all the great movies come out? I suppose it’s a relief to know that the movie industry hasn’t gone completely to the dump but I wish I didn’t want to see so many of the recent releases. I can’t afford to see all of them so close together.

With that said, I am so excited for X-Men III! I’m for sure going to see it tonight! Tony already bought me tickets. Yay for people who don’t have to work. Anyone who sees the movie, feel free to leave a review on here. I want to know what everyone thinks of it, especially those of you who are huge X-Men fans like me.

PS What about The Da Vinci Code? I liked it but it got really horrible reviews. What did you all think?

As I get older I notice the years seem to go by much more quickly. Somehow though a lot still happens in those short spans between one year and the next.

I started thinking about all of this because I spent the weekend at graduation parties for a lot of my friends. Big events in our lives are the ones we tend to be nostalgic about, and graduation is one of those for me.

Of the graduation parties I attended the one to make me think most about the past year was at Tony’s parent’s house. It was for his sister, but there were lots of people I knew there. But with the exception of Sofia and Tony, I knew none of them a year ago.

A year ago I was celebrating my own graduation at my in-law’s house with Donald. They had put it all together for me and invited my family and close friends over to help me celebrate. Later that night Donald and I threw a bit wilder party at our apartment. I spent that day with all the people who were close to me, and today many of those people are no longer a part of my life, or at least not a large part of my life.

It’s just strange how much everything can change in one year – and how much things can stay the same too.

As a Christmas gift last year I received a subscribtion to this really cool magazine called “Bitch.” It’s a feminist magazine that puts pop-culture into perspective and explains a lot of issues effecting women. I just received my most recent issue today and on the back cover this is what I saw:

Is it just me, or did rags go out of style awhile ago? Check out the different products this company offers:

Reusable Pads
Sea Sponge Tampons (I highly recommend reading the FAQ on this one).
The Luna Cup

I like to think of myself as an environmentalist, but somehow I just feel this is going a bit far. Re-usable tampons and pads would totally gross me out. More power to you if you’re interested in trying them out, but I think I’ll stick with disposable for now.

My stupid phone is REALLY broken this time. I had to turn it off because every time someone sends me a text message, instead of getting the message I get a warning message that I can’t accept the message. And the warning keeps coming. Over and over. It started last night around 2:00 a.m. when I was waiting for a text from Sof. I never got the texts though and slept in my car outside her house for about half an hour before she finally called me on HER broken phone so I would know she was awake.

Oh, and when she called I accidently picked up my keys instead of the phone, setting off the alarm on my car and causing one of her neighbors to come out and ask if I was breaking into my own car. Luckily he believed me when I told him it was my car.

Anyway, this was just to let you know if you want to talk to me you’ll have to leave me a message here or on my voicemail and I’ll check them throughout the day.
